How Women are Portrayed On T.V. Shows
STEREOTYPES
Many studies have revealed that women are shown on
television shows as housewives or sex objects (Harper, 2009).
Black women are portrayed under stereotypes that suggest that they are loud, bitter, short
tempered, and aggressive. On most shows no episode is complete without
confrontations and or a threat to physically harm someone (samuels, 2001).
White women are portrayed with stereotypes of being materialistic, gold-diggers, trophy-wives, and not satisfied with their natural body image, a housewife, or a victim that needs or has gotten saved by a man (Harper,2009). On most shows they are in constant competition to have the most beautiful and expensive things and spend most of their time bragging about their finances which are usually built off of a man .
THE LOVE SEARCH CONTINUES...
Despite race women are constantly portrayed as in search of their prince charming on shows such as The Bachelorette or Flavor of love and shows alike. These shows objectify men and women but women are primarily seen as doing anything to get their man which
consists of their type of dress and behavior (Horn, 2010).
If women are not viewed as looking for love they are usually shown as being tainted by it. Many shows are of women that have been mistreated, cheated on, and or divorced. Although the message behind it can be seen as strength to move on it can also give the impression that women can't live without men.
IMAGE IS EVERTHING...
Physical appearances are very important to the women despite their race; most of the women on TV shows are enhanced by cosmetics or have had plastic surgery.
Casting Audition are held for shows that as supposed to be reality based such as love and hip-hop and real housewives of Atlanta to help pick the right connection of people for an interesting show.
Yet, what most viewers find as interesting is drama. So women are casted based on their connection to have a conflict with other women. Most of the women aren’t actually friends off
camera (referenced in video below).
"Some shows run TV ads. Some are mentioned in magazines. Easiest of all, some networks have online casting pages that mention new shows as well as old" (Cooper- Fashingbauer, Gael & Dehnart, Andy 2007).
Surprisingly, even though most shows feature women in ways that attract men viewers the audience of shows that fit the previous criteria are primarily women (Harpe, 2009).
Although most women on these shows intend to create a good image for their selves by looking good on the outside it becomes irrelevant when measured with their attitudes on the inside. Yet, then again no one said reality was pretty!
